Women's Research and Development Center
Mission
The Women's Research and Development Center is an organization of women, diverse in age, race, income and background. We promote the economic independence and self-esteem of women through the development of affordable housing and related technical skills in a supportive environment.
We need volunteers right now for the following:
-
General office/administrative help
-
Fundraising--grant writing assistance and research
-
Board members--right now, we especially need a Treasurer, specifically, a person who is well-versed in the complicated financial structures of non-profits.
We also offer Home Repair Classes for women taught by women professionals.
Drywall & Plaster
After this class, you will see cracks and holes in walls, even big ones, as opportunities to show off your new skills. You'll learn professional techniques for installing, patching, and finishing plaster and drywall.
Plumbing
Toilets and faucets are wonderfully easy to love, even in old houses, because the systems have not changed much over the years. In these classes you will learn the parts, how to replace and upgrade broken parts, how to clean slow-draining systems effectively without using hash chemicals.
Electric
What is a circuit, and who needs one? You will find out in this class, and then learn how to add or replace switches, light fixtures, receptacles, and cords. When you are done you will plug in your work and watch it light up!
Carpentry
Learn about different kinds of wood, accurate measuring techniques, how to safely operate hand and power tools, and how to choose the right tool and fastener for the job.
WRDC renovates old, large buildings into affordable, multi-family communities, where many home repair graduate help by volunteering their skills. Their current effort is the old Chase School in Northside.
