Contemporary Arts Center Press Release

Two new “Green Homes” in be built in Northside

The Cincinnati Northside Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (CNCURC) and The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) are partnering to construct two new homes in Northside. The home design is from the CAC’s exhibition “The HOME House Project”. The guiding principle of “The HOME House Project” is to advocate the design and construction of energy efficient and cost effective affordable housing while promoting environmental consciousness and a high standard of contemporary design.

The homes will be two-story, three bedroom, two bath homes with on-site parking. They will also feature construction with environmentally friendly, sustainable and/or recycled building materials including paint products that are low-voc (volatile organic compounds). Energy consumption and associated costs will be decreased through employing natural ventilation and day-lighting, an indirect solar hot water collector system with a high efficiency radiant floor heating system, and energy star rated appliances.

Northside was chosen as the neighborhood of choice for constructing the homes because of the community’s long-standing commitment to environmental principles, its openness to new ideas and the comprehensiveness of current redevelopment efforts underway. A culturally diverse community open to new ideas, the Northside community has long valued and promoted sustainable principles and practices. This commitment is evident in a number of local projects, activities and organizations that range from a civic garden center where residents can grow fresh food, to a native plant habitat maintained by the McKie Center, to a group of residents working with Cincinnati Public Schools to ensure that new school construction incorporates green building principles.

The HOME House partnership with the CAC is part of CNCURC’s Fergus Street Project, a comprehensive redevelopment project that will promote homeownership and expand high quality housing options for all residents. With a very substantial mixed-use development being planned just south of the Fergus Street project area and an increasingly successful neighborhood business district, project sponsors are excited about the larger physical and cultural context that Northside offers.

The site for the two homes is the corner of Chase Avenue and Fergus Street. The site has been acquired with the assistance of initial project financing from the City of Cincinnati. Site preparation and construction on the homes is scheduled for this spring. Special financing options will be available for qualified buyers.
